This poem brings a smile to my face for various reasons. Its an oldie but goodie that I've never shared on this blog. It is dedicated to my good friend Cathy and her ex but the content is totally based on my past relationship from 7 years ago a.k.a. the baby daddy years hence the reference to 50's "Wanksta". One day Cathy and I were discussing relationships and she said "I love him but I don't like him sometimes." Yeah, she definitely quarterbacked this piece right here. Enjoy!

Witty, smart, handsome, ambitious, and passionate.

A mixture of thuggish, rugged, and smooth - now that’s cool.

A strong family man who loves his three seeds.

There’s some respect for the ex (mother of two seeds).

But he loves and cherishes the “next” (mother of one seed).

Like a God to his universe,

He works the hell out of his 9-5, child support always on time.

And he “dirt hustles” this hip hop shit for family and crew.

But it is he in this piece whose character is being juxtaposed…

And frankly, he can get on my fuckin’ nerves.

Spittin’ venom like Bush the Gangsta but comin’ out like 50’s wanksta.

As I second guess MY feelings, carrying the guilt like I’m doing wrong (?)

He’s the nut-scratchin’-drinkin’-milk-from-the-carton exhibit

At the museum of assholes.

And SOMETIMES his lovin’ can amount to

Two minutes of d**k rubbin’…

Inside my walls of pleasure, in and out like the motion of the ocean…

And, oooooooooooooohhhhh…

It’s like oooooooooooohhhhh…

And it’s all coming back to me now,

As I’m reminded of why I love him but I don’t like him sometimes.

This Bishop Eddie Long mess makes me think about the best advice that someone gave me: "it's never too early to talk to your child about being touched inappropriately." I did when my son was in preschool & at the time his school had given his class a presentation & a booklet on the same topic. Also, make sure your sons know who their Daddy is even if it hurts. Perhaps their longing for a father will not be misguided. I'll end with that... because I know there are so many gray areas here. Just speaking on it today.

"Arrogantly, I thought I knew what it was,
But apparently there's
Still so much more for me to learn."

- Dwayne Morgan, "I Thought I Knew Love"

Time to get serious and tone things down just a little with another spoken word piece by Mr. Dwayne Morgan entitled "I Thought I Knew Love". Again, backed by a live band, Dwayne delivers a very heartfelt performance and tribute to the kind of love that must be unconditionally embraced - because you never know when, where, and how you'll be called upon to experience and give love on a much higher level. The real tribute in this performance is to Dwayne's grandmother who also serves as - "the teacher". I won't reveal too much, because I want you to experience this lesson...

I just couldn't wait to unravel the contents behind this man's latest spoken word piece "Make Hate To Me" by poet, author, and spoken word artist Dwayne Morgan. "Make Hate To Me"... my own curiosity stayed pleasantly teased up until a few minutes ago just thinking about the possibilities that Mr. Morgan would bring to the table with a title like that. "Make Hate To Me"... "Make Hate To Me"??? This was either going to be wild and sexy or dark and thought provoking. Well, let's just say my co-worker was ABSOLUTELY right when he said, "it could be something sexy". Hate is the new sexy y'all... enjoy!

Come on now, let me get it in…
Stop because it might hurt.
No one will hear,
Unless you THINK its gone hurt?

I know I’m big and all,
No ego.
But you know my reputation.
I can fertilize your garden and
Sprout us some seeds -
Little brown me’s and
Little brown you's.

Are you ready to do this?
I need you…
To be the example.

Remember my name is Love
And I want you bareback,
Soul-confident and unprotected.
I’ll be gentle
With the walls you’ve erected.

And Miss, its not like we just met.
So, let me slide in,
Be an asset to your universe.
You a class act,
And I want to follow.
Even if I have to wait
For an eternity to burst…

Trust me,
I got you…
Love’s got you.

I never seen
A grown man cry.
But I’ve seen his
Rivers rise -
In his demeanor, misdemeanors,
And four illegitimates
All by Tina.

I never seen
A grown man cry
But I’ve seen his
Rivers rise -
Through his fears,
Through his choices...
See, I listen closely
To them pissed off voices.

"We have something in common..." using my best Whitney Houston voice here but I need a "good" Bobby to help me sing! Alright remember my blog is called brownsugatou: a black woman, her poetry, and then some. Look to the left side bar for links to my poetry. Today's post is in the "then some" category, and is actually quite refreshing... Ladies and gentlemen Macy Gray and Bobby Brown! (That was my Kanye-West-Bush-Don't-Like-Black-People-I-Got-To-Get-It-In voice). Yep, it's 1 in the morning and I have every right to act silly.

Please enjoy this video entitled "Real Love" by Macy Gray and Bobby Brown. This is definitely not Peaches n' Herb, they are riding in their own lane.

No, no, no... I am not referring to Jill Scott (you know she bad). I was just looking for a regular old image today until I came across this artwork of Jill Scott (Hate On Me) by Steven Lopez from his "After Midnight Series". All I can say is WOW!! The series also includes Tina Turner, Erykah Badu, Chaka Kahn, and India Arie. It somewhat fits my short poem below "Vainglorious Waste".  If you really want to read some great poetry that includes true visual inspiration, may I suggest you check out poet Mase Da Ruler at his blog A Ruler's Kingdom. And, learn about his desire, to impact youth with his #WriteOrDie movement.

Artwork by: Steven Lopez - Jill Scott "Hate On Me"

Lightweight expression...

On some days,
I tiptoe
Preferring NOT to
Do this dance.

Watch me -
As I strut,
It/you don't exist.

Follow my smirk.

For Lip prints:

Suck it in),

A Considerate Brotha

“Sista, what is making you happy these days?
What is making you sad, if you ever are?”

Brotha, there is not enough time and space
For you to wait and collect empty
Words that are too translucent
For you to see.

To digest them would be
Akin to you parting the red sea.

Now, if that body of water
Resides between your ears…

Just sit down and  listen.
I need you to.
I need you too.
I need you.

Just randomly writing today...

"Finish me!" cried this poem.

Dig up all your hopes, dreams, pangs,
Sorrows, first times, and sugar coated secrets.

"Finish me off but leave me
The inheritance of your remaining chapters!"

Unleash your gift, be the lifeline to
Someone's heart, and water down
The embers of their sloooow burn.

"Finish me, but allow the beauty of
Your reincarnated words to
Live eternally through me."

The End...

I'm feeling good this morning! I was on Twitter and I love it when I get a tweet with a poem, a beautiful song, or anything that just makes your day a little brighter. MC Hammer tweeted this song earlier "Let's Do It On Up" - and it put the icing on my cake this morning. It has that 70's soul music vibe to it... makes you wanna grab a partner and do the bump or snap your fingers and say "heeeeeeey" - you know how we do! Enjoy and do it on up! I used to be WHOLEHEARTEDLY supported
By DYSFUNCTIONALISM - that’s my fam!
And, yes I still give a damn.
Had my ear to the streets, BEEF,
Love/Love-me-not, knowledge and wisdom.

My heart used to beat box to the
Tune of yours, ours, with OTHERS.
I was quiet, COOL, calm, and

What happened to me?

In this new shit - my new ENVIRONMENT,
Class, "face", and race are more
Important than your generosity
And your POTENTIAL for greatness.
I let it BEAT me down.

I now question GOD about
Who’s showing up in my life?
(Audacity at its worse.)
When the toughest challenge
Is finding my CAST in HIS haystack.

What happened to me?
Seriously what HAPPENED to ME?

I spent seven years NOT taking
A hard look at MYSELF.
And I spent SEVEN years NOT
Reaching back, NOT giving back,
And NOT looking back (word to Lauryn)
That shaped the UNBREAKABLE me -
That I used to KNOW.

What happened to ME?

In a world without He,
Who'd roam the cells of
My thick brown skin,
With those sexy eyes,
Over and over again?

In a world without He,
Who'd gaze at me covertly
As I delicately Picasso my lips...
Mmmmm imagine us interlocked
In a honey brown kiss.

In a world without He,
Who'd mentally rip off my
Baggy grey sweats and
Visualize my soft brown thighs?
The accent of my curvaceous hips?
While entertaining thoughts of my
Sweet potatoe pie?

In a world without He,
Who'd explore the joys of
Karma Sutra with me?
Or the physical pleasure
Of procreating with me?

In a world without He...
I'd lament, cry foul,
And become recklessly weak...

I could never conceive of my
Feminine world remaining
Balanced without He.

My uncle sent me a version of this heartfelt message a few minutes ago. Yep, it made me look. Made me think about some amends that I can fine tune in my life. What about you? That friend that calls you more often than you call them, not saying I love you to those that don't hear it enough (its never enough), and just not simply sharing yourself with others. You never know who needs a hug or a hello or who may benefit from your kind words... from your spoken word or poetry. Don't hide love. Read. Read and Share. Read, Share and take Action

I don't know who the author is but if anyone can shed some light on the origins of this message, please let me know. However, I found this version on the internet by doing a Google search.

"Life is important, Love is important, Tomorrow is

never promised..........

One day a woman's husband died, and on that clear, cold
morning, in the warmth of their bedroom, the wife was
struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't
"anymore". No more hugs, no more special moments to
celebrate together, no more phone calls just to chat, no more
‘just one minute..’ Sometimes, what we care about the most
gets all used up and goes away, never to return before we
can say good-bye, and say ‘I love you.’
So while we have it, it's best we love it, care for it, fix it when
it's broken and heal it when it's sick. This is true for
marriage......And old cars... And children with bad report
cards, and dogs with bad hips, and aging parents and
grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it,
because we are worth it.

Some things we keep -- like a best friend who moved away
or a close friend after divorce. There are just some things
that make us happy, no matter what.
Life is important, like people we know who are special, and
so we keep them close!

I received this from someone who thought I was a 'keeper'!
Then I sent it to the people I think of in the same way. Now
it's your turn to send this to all those people who are
"keepers" in your life, including the person who sent it, if
you feel that way. Suppose one morning you never wake
up. Do all your friends and family know you love them?
I was thinking...I could die today, tomorrow or next week,
and I wondered if I had any wounds needing to be healed,
relationships that needed rekindling, those three words
needing to be said.

Let every one of your friends and family know you love
them. Even if you think they don't love you back, you
would be amazed at what those three little words and a
smile can do. And just in case I'm gone tomorrow....
Live today because tomorrow is not promised …"

Okay, so while I am being patient with inspiration I decided to try one (well two) of those writing prompts and share with the world. Sometimes my ish just stinks but, my offline friends know that I'm the master of laughing at my shortcomings. These two prompts are from a website called "The Journal". The first poetry prompt was to write an Anaphora poem. "An Anaphora is "the repetition of a word or expression several times within a clause or within a paragraph". In poetry the repetition of the phrase can be just at the beginning of each line, setting the tone as a meditation or a mantra, or it can be utilized more subtlety within the poem. The poem can be free verse or prose style." This is what I came up with... I have to admit that I wasn't quite impressed at all as this untitled piece came off as more like a call and response piece.

I say I’m damaged goods,
(Damaged goods)
But I’m not for sale,
(No not for sale).

I was just clearing my throat…
While you embezzled my hope.
Actin’ like ya shit don’t stink.
Your love, loves back
Like a dead mink.

I say I’m damaged goods,
(Damaged goods)
But I’m not for sale,
(No not for sale)

You’re damaged goods
(Damaged goods)
Oh what a sale!
(What a sale!)
Sittin’ on the clearance rack
(Clearance rack)
You guessed it,
60 percent off
‘Cause your love is so wack!

This was more like having fun at being wack, but at the same time I was getting my "release" on. We can all relate to being "damaged goods", however I somewhat missed the mark here and created a corny chrous. I hate the feeling of attempting to write a poem that ends up with five different tree branches - basically I have to put more effort  and discipline into sticking to the theme of the poem as well as engaging the readers.

The second poetry prompt, was to write a free verse poem using "sparrows". *Sighs* I cheated and used the singular word sparrow - *Shaking my head.* And, I don't know, sometimes I believe having lived with an underground dirt hustler (underground rapper who manufactures his own shit) in my past,  I just can't hide the influence even when it sucks.

The vision of my future - so narrow.
Even when my grip is unclenched,
Pendulum swingin’ from this arrow,
I’m gone master this shit -
Raw turbulence can’t obliterate the
Momentum of this sparrow...

Stop the presses, I'm done! I've learned what I've always known - that I express myself better when I write what I truly feel. I'm a rookie poet, but I know I'm not alone here. To be confined by someone else's predetermined space and theme is still a challenge for me. No need to elaborate... this is for the rookie poets out there, I'm still trying.

1. Drink responsibly, drive sober, and take somebody's keys away if need be.

2. Mind your own business: someone else's infidelity, poor cooking, bad ass kids and child discipline skills are NOT your demons. Just leave it alone!!!

3. On some days, your ish does stink, so bringing just yourself and empty hands to the BBQ is FOUL - stay home, watch a re-run of the BET Awards and channel Chris Brown - "I promise I won't let y'all down again."

4. Focus, focus, focus! Checking out the scene with one eye half way open & snickering in the moment for no apparent reason, while saying grace over the ribs is foul too. Think - choking on an unblessed rib vs. licking BBQ sauce off your fingers with a peace of mind? Sorry, Allstate don't have ya' back here!

5. And last but not least embrace without reservation! - If Grannie's hair is dyed jet blue, Uncle Peanut is diggin' an alternate lifestyle, there's a sudden Kool-Aid shortage, Aunt Pam is creeping like a cougar and cousin Tammy is throwin' tofu on the grill - just shut up and thank God for the opportunity to share in their experiences.

Happy 4th of July ya'll! I'll let Tony Toni Tone close out my very brief rant with "The Blues". brownsugatou wants you to spend time with you too.... but please "be nice or leave."

I wrote and posted this poem last year...

"The Gloved One... A Loved One"

You still bad.

The whole world is mourning you,
Like you were ALL we had.

Yeah, the music died yesterday,
And was resurrected by memories
That you gave.

The 60's, 70's, 80's....
New millennium, infinity.

The Blueprint for music videos -
You authored.

A pied piper of music for many generations,
You got my grannie through, pulled my mama through,
Me through...
And now my six year old is rockin' with you too.

You taught us that being black
AND eclectic was a perfect match.

Struggle with a class act -
Mmmmm... you authored that too.

A lil' man wearin' James Brown's shoes
ABC'in and tweet, tweet, tweetin'.

Out of the J-Five,
YOU were all the way live!

The super fro, the jheri curl,
The uncurled curl, and those
Sequinned suits....

And yes...
The Moonwalk
The Glove.
Now try to trademark or copyright that!

We devoured it all Mike.

So, am I selfish when I say
50 years was not enough?
Shit, 30+ years (my time)
Of being in a
Michael Joseph Jackson
Musically induced coma
WILL make you stop thinking
Outside yourself...
Especially when it was just

... and now you're at peace.

On this Father's Day,
As I look at the reflection in my mirror,
My confident image poses uncomfortably.
Each year I'm reminded that I'm scarred.
And nothing can make up for being scarred.
I was just a living accessory to your hate - her.
And innocently guilty of what I knew - love.
Divorced parents - he walked and stayed absent.
A victim of love? Label me that too.
But I'm the wannabe architect of love,
Shared between a man and a woman,
With a hole in my soul
That bears your resemblance - Daddy.
So, I'll just continue to suck it up, not fuck it up.
And learn to give and demand better - love.
