Her

White and trimmed in Gold.
Her purse was crotchet
And stood out
In the dead of winter.
Unmatched by her dark
Colored clothing.

I knew it was you.
Always standing out
And never without.
Yet, I don't know why
You visited me today.
But, your old colors spoke
To me in a discreet way.

Gold was always your thing.
24 karat, you gave birth to bling.

Your white couch,
It was off limits.
What grandchild didn't sneak
A seat on it back in the day?

And I remember the crochet
Dolls that you created.
You AND Mrs. Koontz.

But I still don't know why you
Visited me today.

The lump in my throat,
Won't go away.

But my mixture
Of emotions
Stir quietly,
Waiting for an answer.

I don't know why you
Visited me today.

You are here.

This was tough. When I asked spoken word artist, Lyrical Profet, if I could feature one of his videos on my blog, he left that decision up to me. (Yikes) All I can say, is I HAD to pick three of his videos because I felt the varied layers of his passion for the art, for his craft and for people needed to be displayed.

Hailing from Vallejo, CA, Lyrical Profet is NOT a one dimensional kinda cat when it does comes to his craft. Currently, he fulfills hosting duties at the open mic event Poetry By The Bay, (in Vallejo, CA), is owner of Profetic Lyrics (a musical writing company), and will be a spokesperson for the 3rd Annual California Music Industry Summit happening this June in Oakland, CA.  Many layers, and obviously an up and coming mover and shaker on the spoken word scene. BUT, back to sharing his craft. Below, are the three videos that I chose to feature from this talented  artist - "This Is My Prayer", "Is She More", and "You Asked For Change." I love each video piece for different reasons. All have very poignant messages. A desire to be the voice AND backbone for current social issues resonates throughout each video. All this has turned me into a Lyrical Profet fan. Enjoy!

"...but I'm thankful even if this is my last song."
-Lyrical Profet, "This Is My Prayer"

"...here comes another Black Princess derived from the
gutters and streets, of any town, city, or state."
- Lyrical Profet, "Is She More"

"...this is beyond black, class wars separated by
glass doors, you asked for change."
Lyrical Profet - "You Asked for Change"

The figure eight.
 Because of the weight loss.

A radiant glow.
 Because of the skin regime.

Surrounded by good karma.
Because of the positive energy you deposit.

Looking good in that size twenty two.
Because your ceiling is not the standard.

Emanating vivaciousness.
 Because you love yourself.

The compliment to a loving soul mate.
Because you give the best you.

Staying blessed.
Because you put your faith in Him.

Never let anyone question your steps to happiness.

I'm not going to lie when Whitney Houston died, I did not feel the need to rush to my blog to post the details of her death to be popular or anything like that. This woman blessed us with an unspeakable gift that I will never forget... she was there with me (and other fans of my generation) in the 80's, 90's, and now. So, as a fan I took to engaging myself in CNN and Facebooking with my friends who were also remembering and honoring Whitney. I was mourning a voice that had been a constant in my life since I was in junior high school. With the rest of her fans around the world, I too went to church today via BET and CNN and was grateful that her mother Cissy Houston allowed her fans to take part in Whitney's homecoming.

     I'm just grateful...

Whitney Houston, thank you for blessing us with your voice.

"Women are sacred, divine, special creatures. In this earthy, universal spoken word song, Christopher D. Sims a.k.a. UniverSouLove describes how sacred women are. Having been nurtured and raised by three phenomenal women himself, UniverSouLove is more than able to write and expression such feelings. This poem, whether heard or read, is for all women to enjoy."

Funny how a picture can
Arouse the deepest,
Most closed off part of me.
Some nerve.

"Disgusted by their kinks, they bend over
the sink trying to straighten things out." - Dwayne Morgan

This is a new video poem entitled "If Only She Knew Her Beauty" from poet, author, spoken word artist, and one of Canada's finest - Dwayne Morgan. His latest video poem tackles the ACCEPTANCE of what I like to call our superficial "hijacked-image" & society's disgust with our natural beauty. It's one thing to enhance your appearance, but are you doing it because you love you or because society's doesn't love the real you?

After viewing this video, you too will say "Thank you Dwayne Morgan".

Day 1
To say that I miss you
Would not be a lie.
But, I'm bolder when I muse you -
Arranging words
Into stagnant cries...

Day 2
You were not all
That anyway.
You were unspeakably,
All that -
 Everyday.

Day 3
During our journey,
Your cloud was always
Billowing with
Make-this-shit-as-effed
Up-as-possible.
I ran with it.
Decision Rich,
Just didn't fit.
But for the life of YOU,
I couldn't quit.

Still Day 3
Your absent presence
Bothers me.

Your absent presence
Reminds me.

Your absent presence
Is unsoothing.

Your absent presence
Moves me.

Your absent presence
Is deserting me.

Yet, Building
A renewed me.

I'm crying poetically.

The End
