If you scroll waaaaaaay to the bottom of my blog you'll see the Feedjit Widget which I've dubbed the Melting Pot. The Feedjit Widget tracks the location of all visitors who visit my blog. My website traffic is always in the slow lane, however that is not why I blog. I've mentioned before that I was grateful to have had only ONE admirer (non other than Mr. Mac Walton, R.I.P.) of my blog when I first got started. That one admirer is the reason why I keep blogging and keep writing. New bloggers don't give up. But today I wanted to say THANK YOU and send some viral hugs to the people who follow brownsugatou and stop by to visit. It's not about the quantity of blog traffic, but the quality of the... ahhhhh, you finish the cliche. Thank you. ;;))

I wrote and posted this poem last year...

"The Gloved One... A Loved One"

You still bad.

The whole world is mourning you,
Like you were ALL we had.

Yeah, the music died yesterday,
And was resurrected by memories
That you gave.

The 60's, 70's, 80's....
New millennium, infinity.

The Blueprint for music videos -
You authored.

A pied piper of music for many generations,
You got my grannie through, pulled my mama through,
Me through...
And now my six year old is rockin' with you too.

You taught us that being black
AND eclectic was a perfect match.

Struggle with a class act -
Mmmmm... you authored that too.

A lil' man wearin' James Brown's shoes
ABC'in and tweet, tweet, tweetin'.

Out of the J-Five,
YOU were all the way live!

The super fro, the jheri curl,
The uncurled curl, and those
Sequinned suits....

And yes...
The Moonwalk
And
The Glove.
Now try to trademark or copyright that!

We devoured it all Mike.

So, am I selfish when I say
50 years was not enough?
Shit, 30+ years (my time)
Of being in a
Michael Joseph Jackson
Musically induced coma
WILL make you stop thinking
Outside yourself...
Especially when it was just

US...
and
YOUR RHYTHM,
... and now you're at peace.

On this Father's Day,
As I look at the reflection in my mirror,
My confident image poses uncomfortably.
Each year I'm reminded that I'm scarred.
And nothing can make up for being scarred.
I was just a living accessory to your hate - her.
And innocently guilty of what I knew - love.
Divorced parents - he walked and stayed absent.
A victim of love? Label me that too.
But I'm the wannabe architect of love,
Shared between a man and a woman,
With a hole in my soul
That bears your resemblance - Daddy.
So, I'll just continue to suck it up, not fuck it up.
And learn to give and demand better - love.
Scarred.

This post has been edited to include one of the first poems that I read by Tupac - "The Rose That Grew From The Concrete". ... "Funny it seems, but by keeping it's dreams..."

Did you hear about the rose that grew
from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature's law is wrong it
learned to walk with out having feet.
Funny it seems, but by keeping it's dreams,
it learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
when no one else ever cared.

Wow.... I am still at odds with my own thoughts on this video (see below) from cnn.com about the controversial pictures of supermodel Claudia Schiffer in "blackface" (a style of entertainment that was historically popular in minstrel shows used to perpetuate black stereotypes). The photos were taken in 2007 by celebrity designer Karl Largerfield and published in British magazine Stern Fotographie. When I saw the pictures I didn't get the impression that Carl Largefield's intent was to stereotype black women, thus I have to agree with super model Roshumba Williams comments - it's artistic. HOWEVER, I do have an issue with Claudia's skin being slightly darkened. How come she just couldn't rock the afro puff and celebrate the glory of a sista's natural hair? I've always wondered why its acceptable for black women to purchase straight beautiful looking hair but we don't see white women walking around this earth with afro puffs or anything that emulates black women's hairstyles? Is my black not beautiful? I'm a proud nappy headed wearing black woman. The women in my family have historically worn wigs and weaves. Take notice of my lack of criticism in regards to black women wearing weaves. It's just disturbing that the acceptance of black people's natural looks are so underrated. Racism is the biggest doo doo stain that never left America. And it's even more disturbing that our society still can't accept themselves either. "Pimp My Body" (plastic surgery, face lifts, long held standards of beauty, etc) is a mentality and another doo doo stain that will never leave America also. Is my black not beautiful? Are you not beautiful?

The words I want to express
Are chained to a rusty lock,
Quieted by your
Childish games -
And disregarded by
The petty actions
Of those other names

When I step in love,
You call it disdain.
When I act for us,
I’m a selfish
WMD.

Cliché…
I go left,
You go right.

But out of love,
I patiently wait for
You to recognize the
The stupidity of your reflection…

‘Cause, its out of love...
That I accept the beauty in your reflection.

There’s a King somewhere
Alone, woman-starved and
In a constant mental funk.
Married to his own love gluttony
Committing a slow suicide…

There‘s a Queen somewhere…
Pregnant with selfish.
Abandoned, companionless.
Mated to family, work, & friends,
Committing a slow suicide…

*This piece was written earlier this evening
upon request...

The harder I love,
The dumber you get.
This is not rocket science,
But L-O-V-E
Arithmetic.

I didn’t divide me.
I uncovered my soul
And gave you
Two halves of me.
Do the math.

When I committed to our love,
I gave you one fourth faith,
One fourth honesty,
One fourth honor,
And one fourth trust.
But I nourished the
Whole of our being.
While you viciously
Widened the circumference
Of the hole in my heart.

Yep,
I was a sucker...
But now I’m doing the math.

Statistics indicate
That I should stay.
Although I’m expected to go
And make those numbers grow.

Part of my heart remembers
Half of the good years
And half of the great times.
Divided.

I sometimes long to
Be near you.
Caress you and
Kiss you
Softly until my body
Trembles at the thought of
Losing you.
Or losing it -
Exponential carnal desires
For your flesh?

No.
Instead of loving a part of you,
And hurting all of me,
I’m walking away from
The whole you -
Sadly, a part of me too.
Do the math.

The harder I loved,
The dumber you got - about love.
It wasn’t rocket science,
But L-O-V-E
Arithmetic.

Fearless In Flip Flops

Short and brown
With an unmatched beanstalk demeanor.
Ashy legs, lacking Vaseline Sunscreen
Owned by a skinny lil’ dude with
Worn flip flops on his feet.

Fearlessly he overtakes the pavement
The grass and sand dunes.
He’s Hannibal on his scooter.
Flip flops on his ashy feet

Climbing, running, falling
Running, falling, climbing
Falling, climbing running

The hot climate melts fire.
His forehead bleeds sweat,
But his breathing & yelling
Sing a joyful noise
“Tag you it!”
Flip flops on his ashy feet

Climbing, running, falling
Running, falling, climbing
Falling, climbing running

“Hey mama, I’m over here!”
He waves from the highest peak
Of his Mt. Everest
Made of steel, plastic,
Shaky wooden bridges, and squeaky swings.
He’s climbed it a zillion times.
Flip flops on his tired ashy feet.

Climbing, running, falling
Running, falling, climbing
Falling, climbing running…

I’ll never forget,
The summers that you played
Fearlessly with flip flops
On your ashy little feet.

Where is Poetry?

Months ago you used to be so close to me.

We used to hang tight, late at night with

the Mighty Pen

And Weathered Notebook.

Up to no good, consuming old thoughts

About my old hood, juggling metaphors,

Hard rhymes and similes.

Now it’s like we are best friends who

Don’t communicate anymore,

But find the comfort of solitude a bit more soothing.

Where is Poetry?

ERYKAH BADU - Turn Me Away (Get MuNNY)

I usually don't (post lyrics)... but poetry is a song, is lyrics, is hip hop, it is the cloudy or organized alphabet that makes love to our ears. Enjoy your Munny honey! brown ;-)

Get Munny [4x]

Can't turn me away
I believe in your heart
I'll always want to stay [2x]

Eww can't lie to you honey
I just want your money
Hi answer me Munny
Don't run from me trying to
Get away just stay ok
Cause Munny I want you back
La la la la

I look like a model
I'll do what I gotta do
to stay in the running cause I want your money
Give me some
I'll be the one back stage
cause Munny I want you back
La la la la

Can't turn me away
I believe in your heart
I'll always want to stay [4x]

I'll wait on your doorstep
Till you let me come in
Hey I'll be your best friend
Say Munny can you come out and
play I'll stay or I'll come back
Cause Munny I want you back
La la la la

Fresher than the others
I'll cook like your Mother
I I'll bring the honey
You just bring the money
Fingers crossed behind my back
Cause Munny I want you back
La la la la

Can't turn me away
I believe in your heart
I'll always want to stay [4x]

??
Jewels Cars and Candy Clothes
Electric garden hose
Down to the minerals
Tickle tickle before stroke
I love your solid golds
I love your pearly ball
You know that I am still
just how you want to feel

Ewww uh oh
Dropped your mind
Scooped it up
Put it in my sock
I'll be your robot girl
Come into me my world
I will wait

Ewww weee boy
let me drop ya off
I'm your predator hey
Cause Munny I want you back
La la la la

Can't turn me away
I believe in your heart
I'll always want to stay [4x]

"Amazing Grace", Aretha Franklin's best selling musical project ever is finally being turned into a concert film. I have purchased the CD twice, and the first time I was going through some hard times... Aretha's version of "Old Landmark" saved me and still gives me chills when I hear her "sang it!". See my poem "Brown Suga Baby". Anyway, I am glad Sydney Pollack documented the recording of "Amazing Grace"... if it is the last movie I go see or the last DVD I ever purchase... I have lived! Here's the trailer.(The CD also features sermons from Aretha Franklin's late father, the Rev. C.L. Franklin - I am also hoping there is footage of him included in the film.)

15 minutes.

I got 15 minutes
To relax, de-stress,
Unpack my mind
And clean out the closets
Of clothes that
Are not mine...

I hide away for 15 minutes.

Stories, issues, and damp tissues,
Unnwillingly connect with me.
So for 9 hours each day
I "absorb" you.
But I find solace in 15 minutes.

15 minutes.

My first book is now available on lulu.com entitled "Po(hims) and Poetry". Wait I believe I jumped the gun here... I published "Crazy In Love With You (Poetry Is A Song)" on lulu.com first. "Po(hims) and Poetry" includes a lot of what I have already shared, but the important thing is that I actually published my work whether it's D.I.Y. or P.O.D., I did it and I want to share it with the world!

I haven’t acknowledged National Women’s History Month yet
But let me take the time out to say the name Mo’Nique.

I couldn’t come up with any original ideas to celebrate
National Women’s History Month but I poetically spoke on
The “atrocity” that occurred to a teenage girl at Richmond High School

I know, I know, I really could have taken the time to embrace National Women’s History Month but Sandra Bullock’s faith and lazy third eye kept piercing my mind Time after time.

Man, I kinda felt like I let somebody down because I did not even post a blog
About National Women’s History Month ‘cause I was too busy (still)
Inhaling the whiff of my own mama’s strength.

Mmmmmmm…

Michelle Obama, mothers, daughters, sisters, grannies, aunties, sheroes,
Been-there-when-we-were-called-negroes, cotton pickers,
Endured-years-of-being-called-mammy,
Laid-on-my-back-for-massa-and-birthed-beautiful-to-roots-I-can't-claim,
Lucille, Maya, Pearl S. Buck, Mary McLeod Bethune and Victoria Claflin Woodhull...

Let me stop and wrap myself in the glory of “my” Laura Chinchilla.

Nah, I don’t feel bad about not at least mentioning National Women’s History Month,
‘Cause I realized that I was already seeking knowledge at that party,
I am that party, we are that party, “y’all” just tardy.

Just ranting and definitley NOT hating on National Women's History Month.

I always thought Don Cornelius was just too cool to go down the Soul Train line. I had the opportunity to visually see that I was wrong when I watched a documentary on the Centric Network about Soul Train (Soul Train, The Hippest Trip In America) yesterday. Not only did he strut his stuff down the infamous Soul Train Line, Mr. Cornelius rocked it out with Mary Wilson from the Supremes and even said that he was "NOT" the worse dancer at house parties back in his day. Don Cornelius is the creator of one of the most influential television shows on black culture and its music. He talked the talk, walked the walk, and danced the dance.  Clip is from You Tube.

Me just thinking outloud today. I could not derive at a full length poem, but I thought these little gems were at least worth sharing. It's better than having writer's block. Right?

Love
Our muddy interlocking hands.
No need to question it.
Just understand.

Joy
Uprooted from the depths of hell,
The creases of her mouth have victoriously reached the mountain top.
Her soul breathes.

Me vs. My Will
Sometimes the pain can be too much to bear
I don't die...
I just forget how to breathe.

ADVERSITY: - Definition: Jonathan Anthony Burkett

“The same whom create, is the same whom will destinate”.
- Jonathan Anthony Burkett

At an early age this young man came face-to-face with… became close friends with… and “divorced” his own darken ashes. When most children his age were being nurtured by the very person who gave them life, Jonathan Anthony Burkett was busy fighting the woman who didn’t want him to have “life”, not a life but “life” for her own son. Is this not the epitome of adversity? You NEED to read his autobiography to find out. Despite setbacks early in his childhood, Mr. Burkett is now a determined young man who wants to inspire others with his story. He now the author of three books, "Living An Broken Hearted Life", “Autobiography of Jonathan Anthony Burkett, My Life, My Story” and “Friends 2 Lovers” which are all available online at Amazon.com.

brownsugatou came across Mr. Burkett’s Facebook page several months ago. And after reading what he shared about his amazing life (think about Tyler Perry's darken ashes)… I thought “this guy definitely has a story to tell!” because someone out there “needs” his story. So, today brownsugatou, gives you a Q & A with author, poet, and survivor, Jonathan Anthony Burkett.

Q: When and where were you born?
A: I was born February 1, 1987 in Miami, FL.

Q: Use one word to describe Jonathan Anthony Burkett?
A: Determined.

Q: I’ve read your bio, which details the challenges that you’ve faced in life and we know there are always more (challenges) to come. But, tell us, what inspired you to write?
A: I’ve had a psychiatrist, therapist, psychologist , and many others tell me that if I continued to hold on to my past nothing else but more trouble will come to my life. However, if I learned to forgive and let go of all past nothing else but more trouble will come into my life. However, if I learned to forgive and let go of all that I kept questioning myself about, my life would get better and one of the best ways would be to talk it all out with someone, (all that was troubling my mind). But, I didn’t want to so I asked myself… how else could I do it and I decided to write a book about my life the same way how I loved to write poetry because as I child I’ve always loved writing poetry. And I knew that it would be very inspiring and encouraging to many others out there in life that’s going many of the troubles and struggles that I’ve been through as a child.

Q: What is your relationship like now with your mother? Or do we need to wait for your autobiography to publish to find out?
A: My autobiography is published now and my relationship with my mother right now... I'm still trying to develop some kind of connection with her to show her that I have forgiven and wish to move on from the past and also that I do kind of understand what was wrong with her but I didn't like how she handled the problem and didn't seek help.

Q: When you first started writing, did you make a transition from writing poetry to books (or vice versa) or did your start doing both initially?
A: I first started writing poetry when I was a child because I loved reading poetry more than books and then after one of my middle school teachers had got me into writing short stories, so I must say that she was someone else that inspired me to become a writer in my life. Also, it was called a miracle by many that when I took the state test me and another boy scored the highest grade in writing.

Q: Your bio mentions that you held back from obtaining your GED/High School Diploma because all the problems you were facing. What was the defining moment that mad you “get up” and enroll in school, not just think about it, but take action? I ask this question because I work with adults who put off obtaining their High School Diploma or GED for years but finally get it done.
A: I learned that education is the best way to go to become someone great in life, and not only for a career but it also strengthens in your mind so that when hard decisions come and challenge you, you’ll have a better mind of knowing how to deal with that problem the best way. However, I wasn’t able to finish class because I ended up becoming homeless again.

Q: Since the last time we touched bases, your book “Friends 2 Lovers” has been published. How does this make your feel and what has the response been like?
A: Great because I've achieved one of my goals, and everyone that has read my book loves it and can't wait for part two to come out.

Q: Aquarians are known for their friendship first approach when it comes to relationships. You are an Aquarian also, how much your Aquarian heart was put into “Friends 2 Lovers”?
A: One of the main characters in this book who's name is Claude has my personailty and how I would've dealed with every issue and problem that came up, and how he waited patiently, understanding why Kelly his best friend wasn't ready yet to begin something that had already started between them.

Q: Do you have any upcoming book tours planned?
A: At the moment I'm still on my own and I'm trying hard to begin doing book signings down here in south florida colleges and then hopefully start traveling from state to state when I come up with enough income.

Q: What advice would you give to young men who have experienced the same struggles that you have but have not come to grips with their experiences and may be dealing with it in a negative way?
A: Be strong and wise, seek help and guidance from someone older that has a strong understanding of how your feeling and about life. Talk to ministers, teachers, counselors, someone older that has experienced a great amount of lifes challenges. And that someone strong doesn't go looking back for revenge because it'll only result in more problems in life and whenever your ready face it, talk it out in a positive and mature way. Committing suicide might come up in your mind but remember you'll only be hurting yourself because you never know what the next open door in life would've hold for you. Most importantly always have faith in your father GOD because he's always by our side.

Q: What advice and words of encouragement would you give young authors and poets?
A: In the beginning its hard finding publishers and agents unless you already have contacts from friends family members bu7t still many do try hard enough and achieve before others. However never give up, keep your head up and focus mainly on achieving your goals. And to never let anything or anyone distract or tell you that you have no chance of achieving your goals in life.

Q: One year from now Jonathan Anthony Burkett will…?
A: Continue writing books, poetry, song lyrics and will be working on becoming not only a script writer but also a actor. I will also be taking part in talking to many young children and many others about trials/tribulations, having faith no matter what, and never giving up in life.

Q: Ten years from now Jonathan Anthony Burkett will…?
A: Write more books, acting, and helping as much people as I can to achieve dreams and more.

Q: One last question, tell the world ONE thing we don’t already know about Jonathan Anthony Burkett?
A: I am understanding.

From darken ashes to climbing the stairway to forgiveness, a silver lining can still shine through - understanding. On this Valentine's Day please share Mr. Burkett's experience with someone who "needs" his story.

Peace and blessings.

Little Boy.

Ya’ mama shouldn’t
Hit you like that,
Little boy.

That…

Wickedly intervenes,
With hopeful dreams…

Gets in between…
Romantic walks,
Kissed with sun beams.

Little boy.
Ya, mama shouldn’t
Hit you like that,

That…

Is love? at its weakest.

My first and number one blog fan.
Mr. Walton didn't know how he moved and encouraged me to "write" on... with my blog, with my poetry. And for a while he was my ONLY fan and I thank him for taking the time out when he could to read my blog as he always highlighted/featured other bloggers as well on his own blog. But it was Mr. Walton that had the award winning blog (www.daddybstrong.blogspot.com) and rightfully so. His blog never fell short of being informative, eduational, encouraging, humorous, and entertaining. Most of all he spoke the truth and highlighted the history of African Americans in his own way. He was also a man of many other talents: author, poet, Family Violence Prevention Coordinator, youth counselor, and president of Cultural Dynamics, Inc.... and those were only a few hats that he wore.
I was saddened to read about his passing last night... but I know his spirit lives on and through the lives of the people that he touched, counseled, fought for and encouraged. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and all that loved him.

Please visit Mr. Walton's blog which still has some great content as well as words from his fans and friends who remember "the Daddy". You can also read about how through his work of counseling how he obtained his nickname. :-) DaddyBStrong.
Below is a link to Mr. Walton's book "The Rebellious Sixties? Yes, I Remember".  His other book entitled, "Miles to Go Before I Sleep: Lessons in Living With Cancer Today" can also be found on lulu.com.
