If " nigga " and " bitch"
are "defined " as friendly terms then
why does " impoverished" , " sexism" ,
"self - hate" and " oppression " still
HURT? # ?

Finding It

I could have made you happy
But, sometimes
I gotta treat you with disdain.
Glorify and baptize my pain
In order to appease the senses of others.

And oh no I'm not apologetic.
When it's showtime - let's get it...
The blank stares, no responses, the Disclosure of your reflection in others, Or "You mighty" with the pen
Every now and again.
The physical words are just
The front door to me.

But my unhappiness is center stage,
Yet the view of the back door to me.
You don't see me (maybe through me)
Uncluttering the clutter that I get from The gutter - my perception.
I hit repeat and it becomes a
Consistently monstrous task
To me.

And I try to get it.
I wrack my brain...
Exactly where is the route to the X
That leads to this priceless treasure
That you see in me?

I don't want to plead, beg, scream, Prematurely sin in
Cotton sheets, and revoke my
Kindness 'cause he wasn't
A sheep - in order to get to
Happy through the veins
Of my poetry...

My sunflower choked on
Water but thrived in the sunshine.

Why does happiness have
To grow from the dirt that
Is slung at me?

*Not fine tuned because sometimes the best intentions for a poem can even lose my attention. As a poet, I just can't sit on idle thoughts for too long. Either the thoughts are captured or they are not. I see now that I have to develop patience for both my gift and inspiration.

Scared
Its a bitch when love is scared.
Love don't love you and,
Love don't care.
Frightening.
Yeah, check that EnVogue tune.
Love can hurt but, hurt ain't love.
Question mark.

Love can be scared
And neglected like an unwanted
Step-child by the
Always Crying Foul...

Why is your heart always
In cardiac arrest?

Remain open, don't protest,
Less stress.
Smile, attract, embrace
Your abundant lot.
Share, don't hog, be an asset.
Flip your dirt. act worthy,
And most importantly, digress.

Because really it ain't just about you.

"So stop ya' blood clot crying...
Owww." (Biggie/Jay-Z)

Because this "end" is real simple -
Have faith.

Unforgiven Business Part Deux

Sista, let me tame that flame
That wanes in your silent eyes.
Can I tenderly kiss each soft
Brown subject of your being,
That has been hijacked,
Stolen, and objectified?

Allow me to say sorry,
Without you labeling me
A "sorry ass muthaf*cka."
And willingly accept my plea to
Want to work it out.

'Cause I just can't stand,
I just can't stand,
To look at you like that...
A wounded pillar of salt,
Sitting defeated,
On
The
Other
Side
Of our red sea.

But, if you ain't talkin' to me,
If you just ain't talkin' to me ...

Then,
Can you spare an ounce of
Forgiveness for both of OUR
Weathered hearts?

Shoes in LoveImage by D.so via Flickr

I didn't want to think today.
So loneliness stayed quiet.
Sadness went on vacation.
And hurt and pain ran away.

I didn't want to think today.
My laughter hid in a bubble.
The lumps stayed at bay.
And smiles made cameos in my silent eyes.

I didn't want to think today.
I didn't want to think today.

Don't penetrate my wall today.

I didn't want to think today.
I didn't want to think today.
So I didn't hear that brotha say...

Release me,
And forget me.
I shouldn't have to tell you
How this shit goes.

See the spirit of what we had
Was escorted out of our time and space
By the pallbearers a long time ago.

I feel relief.
Unburdened from your discouraging courage
To love, even when my arms of honesty
Where always there to smother you.
Yet, I allowed you to come up for oxygen
And I mistakenly inhaled the heir of your lyin' reign.

Now that its over, your truth...
You need me even more.
Except,
I am no longer willing to bleed.
My truth?
Is right here in my comfortable paradise
Growing above and beyond you.

Release me,
And forget me.

I was really inspired to write this... sometimes feelings cannot be exhibited due to being at the wrong place at the wrong time - but I was feeling this. Enjoy!

Homeboy Get Outta My Ear

Damn,
The bass in your voice is
Paralyzin' my ears.
You are the Help Desk Techie and
I am the Brownsuga in cubicle world
That got connect-ed to you!

"Now... what is your Workstation ID number AGAIN?"
Oh lord! Please, not today -
A repeat offense AGAIN!
The vibration in that voice
Is causing a war between
My need to maintain
Some professionalism and
Throwing all caution
To the wind.

Let's just say I might get
Wrote up for my untamed discipline!
As I take deep shallow
Breathes between the
Delivery of your words
And calculated pauses.

"Uh...let's see Miss...
I'll try to unlock that password."
Nooo, just stop saying wrappin'
That voice around my ears,
'Cause You know yo' shit sounds sexy.
And I can feel your heat -
You grinnin' ear to ear,
Very aware of the position
You put me in, very aware Of the positions
I thought about being in.

"And your ticket number is..."
Says the voice of soft teasing and kind torture.
"Okay, I have it written down."
Says the brownsuga needing a cold shower..
More than she is needing her job at the moment.

Happy National Poetry Month! It's been a while, and sometimes I cannot control the time and space in which I update this blog. But enough about me it's National Poetry Month and today's post features author and poet Jonathan Burkett. He's been featured on my blog before and believe me he's destined to keep going places and being an inspiration wherever he goes. Sit down and take a break and immerse yourself in "Destined To Be" by Jonathan Burkett.

"Destined To Be"

In every journey there is meaning
Following growth and understanding
Though every now and then, an individual
Feels as if that predicament has no significance

Along my voyage in life
I have come across dilemma and uncertainty
Feeling Skeptical of whether or not
I was destined to

Desiring now a change in my existence
A new course in life
I have chosen to take
For I wish to no longer, live my life unfaithfully

Repenting for my sins
Taking the time to replenish
To confirm to myself
I was destined to be

Self-reliant in my goals and dreams
I’ve chosen to be, for in life
There is only one which, I can trust and depend on
To be there for me

Respectful, unto others
I’ve chosen to become
No matter the companionship
Others show unto me

On a new course in life, I must now go
Finding prosperity, and not destruction
Finding fellowship, and not revulsion
Finding brightness, and not darkness
Thinking right, and not wrong
And giving love instead of dreadfulness

A change in my life
We will now all see
To show, through all
I was destined to be

When I stopped feeling you,
All of a sudden your lies
Became your truth.
Now my feminine intuition
Is not the only thing that
No longer believes in you.

When I stopped feeling you,
The well of my once glistening insides
Turned dry in the wake
Of your arousing presence.
And my smile proudly walked away
From the now flameless desire
I once had for you!

When I stopped feeling you,
The twinkle in my eyes
Hardened like colored Starbursts...

Me-watching-you-watching-me-watch-you.
Remember that dance?
My gaze is now perfectly
And confidently contained.

Watch me as I smirk and
Admire My New Vision therapy.

When I stopped feeling you,
I loved, loved, loved, on me,
Passionately,
Unabashedly,
Carefree,
And unashamed of the person who ignorantly But, unconditionally loved the idea of we.

When I stopped feeling you,
I erased the feel of you.

It IS about me being free,
But, it could be about me - NOT in love.
Because I refuse to lose my soul.
Even if,
I felt protected in our inclusive boundaries.
Even if,
I was put in a chokehold by your loyalty.
Still, I'd roam free.

This poem brings a smile to my face for various reasons. Its an oldie but goodie that I've never shared on this blog. It is dedicated to my good friend Cathy and her ex but the content is totally based on my past relationship from 7 years ago a.k.a. the baby daddy years hence the reference to 50's "Wanksta". One day Cathy and I were discussing relationships and she said "I love him but I don't like him sometimes." Yeah, she definitely quarterbacked this piece right here. Enjoy!

I LOVE HIM BUT I DON’T LIKE HIM SOMETIMES:
AN ODE TO CATHY AND JOE:

Witty, smart, handsome, ambitious, and passionate.

A mixture of thuggish, rugged, and smooth - now that’s cool.

A strong family man who loves his three seeds.

There’s some respect for the ex (mother of two seeds).

But he loves and cherishes the “next” (mother of one seed).

Like a God to his universe,

He works the hell out of his 9-5, child support always on time.

And he “dirt hustles” this hip hop shit for family and crew.

But it is he in this piece whose character is being juxtaposed…

And frankly, he can get on my fuckin’ nerves.

Spittin’ venom like Bush the Gangsta but comin’ out like 50’s wanksta.

As I second guess MY feelings, carrying the guilt like I’m doing wrong (?)

He’s the nut-scratchin’-drinkin’-milk-from-the-carton exhibit

At the museum of assholes.

And SOMETIMES his lovin’ can amount to

Two minutes of d**k rubbin’…

Inside my walls of pleasure, in and out like the motion of the ocean…

And, oooooooooooooohhhhh…

It’s like oooooooooooohhhhh…

And it’s all coming back to me now,

As I’m reminded of why I love him but I don’t like him sometimes.

This Bishop Eddie Long mess makes me think about the best advice that someone gave me: "it's never too early to talk to your child about being touched inappropriately." I did when my son was in preschool & at the time his school had given his class a presentation & a booklet on the same topic. Also, make sure your sons know who their Daddy is even if it hurts. Perhaps their longing for a father will not be misguided. I'll end with that... because I know there are so many gray areas here. Just speaking on it today.

"Arrogantly, I thought I knew what it was,
But apparently there's
Still so much more for me to learn."

- Dwayne Morgan, "I Thought I Knew Love"

Time to get serious and tone things down just a little with another spoken word piece by Mr. Dwayne Morgan entitled "I Thought I Knew Love". Again, backed by a live band, Dwayne delivers a very heartfelt performance and tribute to the kind of love that must be unconditionally embraced - because you never know when, where, and how you'll be called upon to experience and give love on a much higher level. The real tribute in this performance is to Dwayne's grandmother who also serves as - "the teacher". I won't reveal too much, because I want you to experience this lesson...

I just couldn't wait to unravel the contents behind this man's latest spoken word piece "Make Hate To Me" by poet, author, and spoken word artist Dwayne Morgan. "Make Hate To Me"... my own curiosity stayed pleasantly teased up until a few minutes ago just thinking about the possibilities that Mr. Morgan would bring to the table with a title like that. "Make Hate To Me"... "Make Hate To Me"??? This was either going to be wild and sexy or dark and thought provoking. Well, let's just say my co-worker was ABSOLUTELY right when he said, "it could be something sexy". Hate is the new sexy y'all... enjoy!

Come on now, let me get it in…
Stop because it might hurt.
No one will hear,
Unless you THINK its gone hurt?

I know I’m big and all,
No ego.
But you know my reputation.
I can fertilize your garden and
Sprout us some seeds -
Companionship.
Friendship.
Trust.
Faith.
Bliss.
Little brown me’s and
Little brown you's.

Are you ready to do this?
I need you…
To be the example.

Remember my name is Love
And I want you bareback,
Soul-confident and unprotected.
I’ll be gentle
With the walls you’ve erected.

And Miss, its not like we just met.
So, let me slide in,
Be an asset to your universe.
You a class act,
And I want to follow.
Even if I have to wait
For an eternity to burst…

Trust me,
I got you…
Love’s got you.

I never seen
A grown man cry.
But I’ve seen his
Rivers rise -
In his demeanor, misdemeanors,
And four illegitimates
All by Tina.

I never seen
A grown man cry
But I’ve seen his
Rivers rise -
High.
Through his fears,
Through his choices...
See, I listen closely
To them pissed off voices.

"We have something in common..." using my best Whitney Houston voice here but I need a "good" Bobby to help me sing! Alright remember my blog is called brownsugatou: a black woman, her poetry, and then some. Look to the left side bar for links to my poetry. Today's post is in the "then some" category, and is actually quite refreshing... Ladies and gentlemen Macy Gray and Bobby Brown! (That was my Kanye-West-Bush-Don't-Like-Black-People-I-Got-To-Get-It-In voice). Yep, it's 1 in the morning and I have every right to act silly.

Please enjoy this video entitled "Real Love" by Macy Gray and Bobby Brown. This is definitely not Peaches n' Herb, they are riding in their own lane.

No, no, no... I am not referring to Jill Scott (you know she bad). I was just looking for a regular old image today until I came across this artwork of Jill Scott (Hate On Me) by Steven Lopez from his "After Midnight Series". All I can say is WOW!! The series also includes Tina Turner, Erykah Badu, Chaka Kahn, and India Arie. It somewhat fits my short poem below "Vainglorious Waste".  If you really want to read some great poetry that includes true visual inspiration, may I suggest you check out poet Mase Da Ruler at his blog A Ruler's Kingdom. And, learn about his desire, to impact youth with his #WriteOrDie movement.

A Considerate Brotha

“Sista, what is making you happy these days?
What is making you sad, if you ever are?”

Brotha, there is not enough time and space
For you to wait and collect empty
Words that are too translucent
For you to see.

To digest them would be
Akin to you parting the red sea.

Now, if that body of water
Resides between your ears…

Just sit down and  listen.
I need you to.
I need you too.
I need you.

Just randomly writing today...

"Finish me!" cried this poem.

Dig up all your hopes, dreams, pangs,
Sorrows, first times, and sugar coated secrets.

"Finish me off but leave me
The inheritance of your remaining chapters!"

Unleash your gift, be the lifeline to
Someone's heart, and water down
The embers of their sloooow burn.

"Finish me, but allow the beauty of
Your reincarnated words to
Live eternally through me."

The End...

I'm feeling good this morning! I was on Twitter and I love it when I get a tweet with a poem, a beautiful song, or anything that just makes your day a little brighter. MC Hammer tweeted this song earlier "Let's Do It On Up" - and it put the icing on my cake this morning. It has that 70's soul music vibe to it... makes you wanna grab a partner and do the bump or snap your fingers and say "heeeeeeey" - you know how we do! Enjoy and do it on up! I used to be WHOLEHEARTEDLY supported
By DYSFUNCTIONALISM - that’s my fam!
And, yes I still give a damn.
Had my ear to the streets, BEEF,
Love/Love-me-not, knowledge and wisdom.

My heart used to beat box to the
Tune of yours, ours, with OTHERS.
I was quiet, COOL, calm, and
COMPASSIONATE.

What happened to me?

In this new shit - my new ENVIRONMENT,
Class, "face", and race are more
Important than your generosity
And your POTENTIAL for greatness.
I let it BEAT me down.

I now question GOD about
Who’s showing up in my life?
(Audacity at its worse.)
When the toughest challenge
Is finding my CAST in HIS haystack.

What happened to me?
Seriously what HAPPENED to ME?

I spent seven years NOT taking
A hard look at MYSELF.
And I spent SEVEN years NOT
Reaching back, NOT giving back,
And NOT looking back (word to Lauryn)
To the EVIRONMENT
That shaped the UNBREAKABLE me -
That I used to KNOW.

What happened to ME?
